The basics

What is Engin?
Engin is Australia's leading broadband phone company. We allow customers to make and receive telephone calls using their broadband internet connection. The advantage of this technology is significantly reduced local, mobile and international call rates.
What is required to use the Engin service?
To be able to use the Engin service all you need is a broadband internet connection.
Do I need to keep my existing phone service?
This depends on what type of broadband connection you have. ADSL broadband requires a telephone line to connect through so you will therefore need to keep your existing phone line. Cable broadband does not require a phone line so you will not need your existing phone service.
Do the people I am calling need to have Engin too?
No, you can call anyone from your Engin service. You make mobile, local, national, international and special services calls from Engin just like a standard telephone service. A bonus is Engin to Engin calls are free, so if you set your family and friends up on Engin you'll get the benefit of these free calls.
How do I dial a phone number using Engin?

Engin works the same way as your existing telephone service. Pick up the telephone receiver, listen for a dial tone and then dial the required telephone number.

If you are dialling interstate then you will need to include the area code (eg, 03 for Melbourne). To dial internationally you will need to first dial 0011 then the country code and then the phone number (eg, 001164xxxxxxxx for New Zealand).

What type of telephone can I use?
Any normal telephone can be used. This includes both cordless and corded telephones. If you are looking to upgrade your existing telephone set-up, one of our cordless Internet Phones might be the right product for you.
Do I need to have the computer turned on to make a call?
No, your computer can be switched off but you will need to leave your modem and router on in order to make and receive calls.
How fast an internet connection do I need to use the Engin service?
Engin recommends that you have a minimum broadband speed of 512/128.
Can I keep my existing phone number?

Engin does not yet offer Local Number Portability, you will be allocated a new number with your service.

However some Engin products allow you to keep your existing phone number for incoming calls, by connecting your existing phone line.

Can I dial 000 and does my 000 information show up correctly?

If you live in an Engin coverage area, all emergency services calls to 000 will work.

As an Engin customer it is important to understand that you must notify us if you change your address, that way if you make an emergency services call your correct address will be identified.

If you live outside an Engin coverage area and require an Engin 1way service, or if you are bringing your own VoIP device, calls to emergency services are not supported.

Will I be listed in the White Pages?

The Internet and VoIP technology questions

What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, and is the new and innovative way to make and receive phone calls. VoIP sends voice signals over the internet, rather than through the regular telephone network. This allows for significantly reduced call rates.
What is broadband?
Broadband is a general term for different types of high-speed, high-bandwidth Internet, including ADSL and cable. Broadband can carry voice, video, and data simultaneously.
What is WWW?
WWW stands for World Wide Web. This is the Internet facility that allows you to browse web pages.
What is a Voice Box?

The Engin Voice Box is a device that converts your analogue phone signal to digital so that it can be sent over your broadband internet connection, as opposed to the old telephone system.

Engin's Internet Phones have 'built-in' Voice Box functionality.

Is Engin the same as Skype?

No, the main differences between Engin and Skype are outlined below.

Engin customers make and receive calls as they normally would using their existing telephone handset, or an Engin cordless Internet Phone. Skype relies on a 'Softphone', meaning you need to use a headset or USB phone and talk through your computer.

Engin is an Australian owned and operated telecommunications network. Skype uses people's computers and bandwidth to support phone calls that others make.

Can I use my computer while on the phone?
Yes, you can use your computer at the same time as making a call on your Engin service.
Can I bring my own VoIP device to use with Engin?

Will my Engin service work if I lose power?

Your Engin service will not work if there is a power outage, as your Engin product requires power to maintain the service.

However if you have a product that supports the switchback feature then it will automatically revert back to your existing landline service in the event of a power outage.

Products that have switchback include:

  • Voice Box 2
  • Voice Box 3102
  • Voice Box 3
  • Engin Internet Phone 121
  • Engin Internet Phone 221

Can I use my Engin Voice Box with another service provider?
