What is BYO?
BYO is a service that allows customers to bring their own SIP device to use with our Network. This allows VoIP enthusiasts to play with their own settings and customize the devices to their own needs.

What features work with BYO?
BYO provides a large range of network-based features. By providing these features on a network level, this helps to accommodate for the vast range of SIP devices . Network based features include Voicemail, Caller ID, Call Forwarding, Call Screening and Direct Group Dial. Other features will vary depending on what is offered by the individual SIP device. Both Network and individual features may be incompatible with BYOD depending on individual SIP devices and their settings.
Does BYO come with technical assistance?
No, technical assistance is not available for BYO. Customer Service is available for account and billing inquires only.
Will my BYO voice service work if I lose power?
Your BYO voice service will not work if you lose power unless you have a SIP device that supports a PSTN built in redundancy.
Will emergency services work with BYO?
Please be advised that your BYO hardware may need to be configured to make outgoing emergency calls to 000.
engin does not block calls to 000 on its network, however it is important that you contact the manufacturer of your device to ensure that the dial plans are set to allow calls to 000 and that the call routing to 000 is set up correctly.

What equipment is required?
The simple answer is, you need:
- a broadband connection (for example: cable modem, DSL or wireless),
- an Ethernet router or switch,
- a SIP device, and
- a telephone.
How do I configure my device?
Once your Engin account has been activated, you will be sent instructions via email. These instructions will include all necessary set-up information along with your username and password that you will need to configure your device with. If you can not access the email instructions please contact Engin Customer Service on 1300 305 000 for assistance.
I'm not in an engin coverage area, am I still eligible for the BYO service?
Yes, the BYO service is also available as a 1way service. The price for a 1way service starts from $9.95 per month. You can purchase a BYOD switchboard number for an additional $5.00 per month.
What SIP DEVICE devices work with BYO?
All devices are welcome to be used on the BYO Network. However, BYO does not guarantee that every device will work with our service.
Can I bring my existing engin phone number over to BYO?
Yes, you can keep your existing engin phone number.
Is there anything else I should know?
BYO does not have an inbuilt redundancy network.

What should I use for my SIP proxy?
The SIP proxy address is byo.engin.com.au
What should I use for my outbound proxy?
Please choose the closest SIP server address to your location.
- Sydney: syd.byo.engin.com.au

What should my registration time out be set to?
900 seconds.
What username do I use to configure my device?
Your username is your 10 digit Engin phone number.
What is SIP?
SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. SIP is the VoIP standard (which is used by BYOD) for transmitting telephony.
What Codec do I use?
engin recommends that you use G729A codec as this utilises the best data compression and provides good voice quality. If sound quality is still not sufficient then G711A is another alternative.
Should I disable Silence Suppression?
Silence suppression is a feature that is used to disable the flow of data when you are not talking on the phone. If you enable silence suppression you will save on bandwidth.
What ports need to be opened on my firewall?
For most routers you will need to open port 5060 for the BYOD service to work.
What are proxy settings?
Proxy settings are settings that need to be entered to make sure that your SIP device has a temporary connection when you make a call.
What are DNS settings?
DNS settings are settings that need to be entered to make sure that your SIP device is directed to our proxy server.
What is Provisioning?
Provisioning allows automatic updates and configurations to be sent from a VoIP provider. BYOD does not support provisioning.
What is a dial plan?
A dial plan is used to customise your dialling patterns. For example, a dial plan will allow you to restrict the calling of certain numbers or else enable you to dial local phone numbers without having to dial the local number area code.
