Voice Box 2

How do I set up my Voice Box 2?
Your Voice Box 2 can be set up under a number of different conditions. Set up will depend on how many spare PSTN telephone ports you have. An ADSL filter may be needed depending on how you wish to set up your Voice Box 2.
What is PSTN?
PSTN stands for Public Switched Telephone Network. Basically, this is a normal landline copper wired network carrying analogue voice data.
What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over the Internet Protocol. It is the communications service used by Engin that sends your phone calls over the Internet rather than the PSTN service.
What is an ADSL Filter?

An ADSL Filter is a small device that splits one end of the phone line to use with ADSL and the other end to use with a phone handset.

You will need an ADSL Filter if you only have one PSTN wall socket, as you will need to plug in both your router (ADSL) and Voice Box 2. ADSL Filters range from $10 to $25.

An ADSL Filter may have been provided by your ISP or even installed internally. If one has already been installed or you are not sure, please check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for details.

How many phone lines does the Voice Box 2 have?

The Voice Box 2 has 1 phone line and 1 port line.

  • Phone: This is where you will need to plug a regular telephone in. This will allow you to make calls over VoIP.
  • Line: This is where you connect your Voice Box 2 to your PSTN wall socket.
Will my Voice Box 2 still work if I do not plug it into the PSTN wall socket?
Yes, your Voice Box 2 will still work. However a number of features such as Switchback, Landline Ring Through and Anywhere Connect will not work if the Voice Box 2 is not plugged into the landline wall socket.
I have cable broadband, will the Voice Box 2 still work?
Yes it will still work. But you will need a PSTN landline connection for features such as Switchback, Landline Ring Through and Anywhere Connect to work.
What happens if the power or ethernet connection goes down when I am in the middle of a call?
Your call will be terminated and you will need to hang up and re-dial. This will activate the PSTN service.
What happens when the power or ethernet connection is restored when I am on the phone (connected to PSTN service)?
Your call will continue on the PSTN service until you terminate the call. Once the call is terminated, all calls will be re-routed back through your VoIP service.
If I have an incoming call to my regular PSTN landline, can I answer this call from my VoIP telephone?
Yes, when an incoming call comes through on your regular PSTN phone number, both your VoIP Telephone and your PSTN telephone (if you still have one connected) will ring. To receive the call you can answer either phone.
What phones will ring when a call comes through on my normal PSTN landline?
Both your PSTN landline and VoIP phones will ring and both can be answered.
If I have an incoming call to my Engin number, can I answer this call from my PSTN telephone?
No, incoming VoIP calls will only ring on the VoIP telephone. To answer an incoming VoIP call you must answer the call on the VoIP telephone.
What phones will ring when a call comes through on my Engin number?
Only the VoIP telephone will ring.
If my regular PSTN telephone is ringing, how can I tell the difference between an incoming VoIP call and an incoming PSTN call?

The distinctive ring function will allow you to differentiate between calls. For this function to work you will need to have a phone that has a regular ring tone.

If a call comes through on your VoIP from a PSTN line then the ring tone will consist of 2 short ring bursts, silence, then 2 short ring burst, and so on.

If it is a VoIP call then the regular ring tone will be heard (one long ring, silence, one long ring, and so on).

Can I receive calls from my VoIP number when Switchback is active (loss of power or internet)?
Yes, You will need to call Engin on 1300 305 000 and request for your PSTN number to be entered into the Call Forwarding No Registration feature. When your service is down, then all calls will be forwarded to your PSTN landline and both your PSTN and VoIP telephones will ring for all incoming calls.
Can I make a call on both my PSTN phone and Engin VoIP phone at the same time?
Yes, a call can be made on both lines at the same time. The only exception is if you have answered a PSTN call from your VoIP phone, as this will tie up both lines at once.
What will my caller ID show when outgoing calls are made?

If you make a call from your PSTN phone, then your regular PSTN landline Caller ID will be displayed.

If you make a call from your VoIP phone then your regular VoIP Caller ID will be displayed.

If your Switchback service is in use (due to power or Ethernet loss) and you make a call from your VoIP telephone then your PSTN landline Caller ID will be displayed.

Will my Engin phone display caller ID when I receive an incoming call to my PSTN landline?
Yes, your Engin phone will display incoming caller ID for both VoIP and PSTN calls (You must have Caller ID with your current PSTN provider for Caller ID to be displayed from PSTN calls).
Will emergency services (000) work through the Voice Box 2?

Yes, all emergency services calls to 000 will work, provided you are not an Engin 1way customer. 1way customers live outside an Engin coverage area and are provided with a 'virtual' number rather than a geographic number. It will therefore not be recognised by 000.

As an Engin customer it is important to understand that you must notify us if you change your address, that way if you make an emergency services call your correct address will be identified. Emergency services will also work if your Switchback service is active (loss of power or Internet) by diverting to your existing PSTN landline.

Can I make multiple calls at the same time using the one Engin phone line?
Yes, the Voice Box 2 allows users to make multiple calls using the one telephone line. This can be done using the Anywhere Connect Feature. If Anywhere Connect is in use (from a remote location) then you can still make a call from the phone that is plugged into the Voice Box 2. Likewise, if the phone plugged into your Voice Box 2 is in use then you can still use the Anywhere Connect feature.
Whenever the Voice Box 2 powers on I hear a clicking sound, why?
This is normal. During initial power up, the Phone port is electronically connected to the PSTN port. When the Voice Box 2 detects that the PSTN port is not in use, it flips an internal electrical relay so that Phone port will connect to your VoIP service. The sound occurs when the internal relay flips over.

Broadband

What is engin broadband?
It is high speed broadband internet delivered using ADSL2+ technology over the existing copper lines coming into your home.
Does engin offer naked DSL & what is it?
ADSL2+ comes in two flavours. The first, sometimes referred to as “bundled DSL”, requires you to pay for a standard phone line in addition to your broadband service. The second, sometimes referred to as “naked DSL”, lets you get broadband without having to pay for a standard phone line. engin offers both bundled and naked DSL – the choice is yours!
How fast will it be?
20Mbps is our top speed but, in reality, this is influenced by the quality of the connection into your home and the distance to your nearest telephone exchange. We expect half of customers on the service will access speeds between 8Mbps and 20Mbps.
How much will it cost?
We have plans to suit everyone. Our plans can be found by clicking here
Can I use the service, but stay with my current phone company?
You will need to switch your phone service over to engin. Or go naked!
Can I keep my existing phone number?
Yes, you can keep your existing number when you join engin. To do this, you will need to transfer your number to engin during the signup process.
If I don’t pay line rental, how do I use my telephone?
Every engin ADSL2+ plan includes access to our broadband phone service. That means you can connect your phone to an engin Voice Box that, in turn, connects to your broadband modem. Your phone calls are then sent across your broadband connection. It works just like an ordinary phone service, but it’s a lot cheaper and includes free access to heaps of features. Visit engin.com.au for more details.
Are you doing anything special with the bundled broadband phone service?
The type of broadband service it is connected too heavily influences the quality of a broadband phone service. Our ADSL2+ service has very good download and upload speeds, ensuring that your broadband phone service will have the bandwidth it needs to work well. What we are really excited about is that we can give your broadband phone calls higher priority than your web surfing activities, so if you are on the phone and happen to download a large file at the same time, your phone call will still continue to be crystal clear!
How easy will it be to move from my existing provider?
Moving your existing phone and Internet service from your existing provider may take up to 3 weeks. However, during that time, you will continue to receive your existing services from your current supplier. You will receive a minor disruption in your service when the switch is physically made to engin. Simply put, your phone and broadband connection will be out of action for as long as it takes for a technician to unplug a cable from one box and plug it into another.
Can I change plans?
You can upgrade your plan once a month at any time. To do this please contact our customer service team by logging into engin self care or calling 1300 305 000. plan changes will be effective immediately and monthly service charges will be pro rated. Your data allowance will be adjusted according to the new plan you have selected. Alternatively you can purchase and engin Afterburner at any time to receive an extre 1Gb of data. An afterburner allows you to increase your data allowance by 1 Gb for $5 without changing your plan.
Can I see how much data I have used?
Yes you can log into your account online here and check your broadband usage anytime.
When is off peak time?
2am – 8am local time
Does engin count uploads?
No all uploads are free of charges and do not count towards your data allowance.
What happens if I reach my maximum data allowance?
Your service will be slowed to 64/64 kbps. You can purchase an engin afterburner to boost your data allowance or upgrade your plan and start using the internet at engins usual fast speed.
Will my engin Broadband Phone work if my DSL service is slowed?
Yes. Your engin Broadband phone is prioritised over any other traffic so if your DSL service is slowed you can expect to still make great quality calls.
Will my unused data allowance carry over to the next month?
No. Any unused data allowance will be forfeited and reset on your billing anniversary.
What type of Modem will I need?
